To prevent moisture from penetrating the concrete & leaking into rooms below, balcony waterproofing starts with the concrete pour, where a curing agent can be used. The product will evenly cure the concrete, eliminate "hot spots" and hairline cracking, increase tensile strength and prevent reinforcing from rusting.
Prior to tiling, apply a coat of Acrylic Waterproofing Primer to the surface and then apply Flexible Waterproofing Membrane to the whole floor and edges of the balcony, corners and floor/wall joints will require Reinforcing Tape to cater for any joint movement. Also required is a Leak Control Flange fitted to the drain pipe, this will allow any moisture that penetrates through the tiles and or grout to be directed to the drain & not pool below the tiling.
The finished tiling should fall to the drain point from all angles so as to allow all moisture to rapidly drain away, and the grouting can be waterproofed with the addition of Grout and Render Waterproofing Admixture to stop waterborne stains from impregnating & discolouring the grouting.
For existing sound grout applying our Grout Seal 16 solution will waterproof the grout and help to stop waterborne stains from impregnating & discolouring it.
For grouting that has deteriorated, discoloured or has hairline cracks – remove all the unsound grout and use Grout Bond and Seal 4 as a direct replacement for water in your grout. It will greatly increase adhesion to the old grout, fill hairline cracks, recolour and waterproof once cured.
